Which camera works with your photo booth?

BoothDock drives Nikon, Canon and Sony straight over the cable — shutter, live view, aperture, shutter speed and ISO. All 154 bodies are listed below by name, each with what it can do. And what it cannot do is listed too.

How we know what is on this page

Built against real cameras, not spec sheets

Nikon, Canon and Sony bodies sit on our desk. Shutter, live view and exposure were measured on the camera itself — every value read back, every path walked through by hand.

And if your camera does play up

We own the driver layer ourselves — we are not waiting on a supplier who might get round to it eventually. If something sticks on your body, write to us: then we go and look, instead of putting you off until the next release.

Which is also why this page says what does NOT work. A camera that will not fire on the night costs you the event — we would rather you knew beforehand where you stand.

At a glance

What works with what — and where it stops. Every body is named further down.

Brand Connection Shutter Live view Video Exposure
Nikon (61 bodies) USB cable all 51 of 61 44 of 61 yes
Canon (59 bodies) USB cable all all all yes
Sony (34 named, list open) USB cable all all all but 5 yes
Webcam USB / built-in yes yes yes no
GoPro Wi-Fi / USB from Hero 9 yes no no no
Fujifilm, Panasonic, Olympus, Pentax — no no no no

Exposure means: aperture, shutter speed, ISO, compensation and white balance can all be set from the booth, without touching the camera.

And on the iPad?

BoothDock Studio has been on the App Store since 30 September 2026, for iPadOS 17 or later. On the iPad, the iPad camera, USB webcams and Canon and Sony system cameras on a cable all work — with live view and shutter release from the app. The table above describes the Windows version; on the iPad this applies:

Canon and Sony on a cable: live view, shutter release, exposure, video

The camera connects to the iPad directly by USB cable, with no computer in between. Live view and shutter release run from the app, as do aperture, shutter speed, ISO and white balance. Since version 1.4.0, Canon and Sony also film over the cable. The exceptions are the same Sony bodies as on Windows, which do not hand their videos out over USB — that is a property of the cameras, not a settings error.

No Nikon on the iPad

Nikon is not recognised on the iPad; on Windows it is supported. If you need the widest choice of cameras, stay with the Windows version.

On the App Store since 30 September 2026, and since version 1.4.0 also for iPhone — iPadOS/iOS 17 or later.

Everything runs over the cable

Every system camera hangs off the booth computer by USB — Nikon, Canon and Sony alike. No camera Wi-Fi for the computer to join, and therefore no clash with the venue network. The machine stays online and the pictures keep flowing to the hub while the party runs.

Nikon

61 bodies supported by name, from the D40 to the Z 9. BoothDock also picks up new models automatically, even ones released after the last update.

Live view and video

The full set: live view on the guest screen, shutter, exposure and video recording.

Live view, but no video over the cable

Stills and live view work. Video recording cannot be started over USB on these bodies — the camera does not offer the path.

D3 · D3S · D3X · D90 · D300 · D300s · D5000

Stills yes, no live view

These bodies predate live view. Shutter and image transfer work, but your guests cannot see themselves on screen beforehand — for a photo booth that is a noticeable difference.

Canon

From the EOS 1000D to the R1, R100 and R6 Mark III, plus the M series and four PowerShot bodies. And with Canon something applies that is true of no other brand: they can all do the same thing.

Live view and video — on every one of these bodies

Canon ships the camera control itself, and every EOS body runs here through that same driver. So there are no tiers on this list: live view, shutter, exposure and video apply equally to every model named. When a new EOS body appears, it arrives with Canon's next update, not with ours.

Sony

Alpha, ZV, Cinema Line and RX over USB — with full exposure control straight from the booth.

Sony speaks its own protocol, and BoothDock speaks it back. Aperture, shutter speed, ISO, exposure compensation, white balance and colour temperature can all be set from the booth — measured on the ZV-E10, every value read back.

The bodies — and why this list stays open

Sony sells the camera as the α7 IV and announces itself on the cable as the ILCE-7M4 — so both names are here. More to the point: we lock nothing out. If a body identifies itself over USB as a Sony camera, it gets driven, including a model that did not exist when this page was written. A closed list would prevent exactly that.

These bodies will not record video over the cable

These do not hand their footage out over USB. That is not a gap in BoothDock but a decision by Sony — other photo booth software cannot do it there either. Stills, bursts and GIFs run normally; for video the booth records the live view feed instead.

ZV-1 · ZV-E10 · RX100 VII (DSC-RX100M7) · α7R IV A (ILCE-7RM4A) · α7 III (ILCE-7M3)

Worth knowing: the successors can do it. The ZV-1F, ZV-1 II and ZV-E10 II record perfectly well — we match on the exact name, not on the series.

And the rest — answered honestly

Any webcam

Works immediately, no driver and no setup. Good for getting started, or as a fallback when the system camera sulks.

GoPro

Recognised, stills are possible — but there is no live view on the guest screen. Instead of single frames the GoPro delivers a video stream that we do not decode today. On top of that it raises its own Wi-Fi: the computer would have to join it and would then be off the venue network. From the Hero 9 onwards there is a cable route that solves this — we have not built it yet. If you want to run a GoPro, tell us: demand decides whether we tackle it.

Fujifilm, Panasonic, Olympus, Pentax

Not supported today. These bodies come with neither live view nor remote shutter through BoothDock. If you use one and would like to run BoothDock: tell us which — demand decides what we add next.

Do I need a system camera, or will a webcam do?

A webcam is enough to get started and works straight away. A system camera gives visibly better pictures, real background blur and copes far better in poor light — at an evening event the difference is large.

Does the camera have to connect over Wi-Fi?

No. BoothDock drives Nikon, Canon and Sony over the USB cable. That is steadier than Wi-Fi, and the booth computer stays on the venue network instead of joining a camera hotspot.

Does live view work on the guest screen?

Yes, on every body that delivers live view over the cable — 51 of the 61 Nikon models listed, all 59 Canon bodies, and every Sony. The lists above say which ones model by model.

Can I record video with the camera as well?

With Canon and most Nikon bodies yes, straight through the camera. On some Sony models the camera will not hand video out over USB; there BoothDock records the live view feed instead.

What if my camera is not on the list?

BoothDock picks up new Nikon and Sony bodies automatically — we do not lock anything out just because we have not seen it yet. With Canon, new EOS models arrive with Canon's own update. If your camera is not listed, do ask first: we answer honestly, even when the answer is no.
